چکیده

A framework of data organization methods and corresponding recognition results for UNIPEN databases is presented to enable the comparison of recognition results from different isolated character recognizers. A reproducible method for splitting the Train-R01/V07 data into an array of multi-writer and omni-writer training and testing pairs is proposed. Recognition results and uncertainties are provided for each pair, as well as results for the DevTest-R01/V02 character subsets, using an online scanning n-tuple recognizer. Several other published results are surveyed within this context. In sum, this report provides the reader multiple points of reference useful for comparing a number of published recognition results and a proposed framework that similarly allows private evaluation of unpublished recognition results.

Isolated Persian/Arabic handwriting characters: Derivative projection profile features, implemented on GPUs

For many years, researchers have studied high accuracy methods for recognizing the handwriting and achieved many significant improvements. However, an issue that has rarely been studied is the speed of these methods. Considering the computer hardware limitations, it is necessary for these methods to run in high speed. One of the methods to increase the processing speed is to use the computer pa...

An Additive On-line Single Character Recognition Method

The on-line isolated character recognition problem is in many respects a mature research area with several industrial applications. When it comes to on-line cursive word recognition progress has been much slower. One of the obstacles refraining simple extension of the validated single character recognition methods to cursive word recognition is the fact that most methods rely on various forms o...

Character Recognition Experiments Using Unipen Data

This paper presents experiments that compare the performances of several versions of a Regional-Fuzzy Representation (RFR) developed for Cursive Handwriting Recognition (CHR). These experiments are conducted using a common Neural Network (NN) classifier, namely a MultiLayer Perceptron (MLP) trained with backpropagation. Results are given for Sections 1a (isolated digits), 1c (isolated lower-cas...

A new fuzzy geometric representation for online isolated character recognition

This paper introduces a new fuzzy representation for isolated character description. This representation maps a character from its original sequence of 2D coordinates into a fuzzy vector space that can thereafter serve as input to any artificial neural network classifier. Recognition experiments on isolated digits extracted from the UNIPEN database are then conducted to evaluate the performance...

Genetic engineering of handwriting representations

This paper presents experiments with genetically engineered feature sets for recognition of on-line handwritten characters. These representations stem from a nondescript decomposition of the character frame into a set of rectangular regions, possibly overlapping, each represented by a vector of 7 fuzzy variables. Efficient new feature sets are automatically discovered using genetic programming ...
